Broadcasters failed to persuade the Hutton Inquiry to allow television cameras into the main part of the hearing.
Lord Hutton declined requests by ITN and Sky News to broadcast proceedings. Only the opening and closing remarks will be broadcast.
Geoffrey Robertson QC, for Sky and ITN, argued that part of the hearing should be televised to make the inquiry “truly open” to the public.
They were prepared to exclude filming evidence of Kelly’s family and friends or “testimony of anyone else who may regard the presence of cameras as an intrusion into private grief or as imposing an unwanted burden of stress”.
But Lord Hutton said cameras could place extra pressure on witnesses and rejected the claim that the public could only gain a “fair view” of proceedings via TV.
