Former Observer editor Will Hutton has been appointed to the Scott Trust – the body which runs Guardian Media Group.
Hutton was editor of The Observer from 1996 to 1999 and still writes a weekly column for the paper. He was previously a Panorama reporter and economics editor of Newsnight and is the author of The State We’re In and The World We’re In.
Hutton said: “The Scott Trust is a unique institution that guarantees the editorial independence and integrity of two great British newspapers, The Guardian and The Observer. It is an enormous privilege to be invited to become a trustee and I will try to serve both them and the wider Guardian Media Group as best I can.”
The Scott Trust was created in 1936 to protect the independence of The Guardian and the principles of its owner/proprietor of 50 years, CP Scott.
The trust wholly owns GMG, which comprises: The Guardian, Observer, Manchester Evening News, Reading Post, 41 local weekly papers, several local radio stations and Trader Media Group (which includes Autotrader and Adtrader).
The current members are: Liz Forgan (chair), Larry Elliott, Anne Lapping, Paul Myners, Geraldine Proudler, Robert Phillis, Alan Rusbridger, Jonathan Scott and Martin Scott.
