Hull reporter video-blogging from round-the-world yacht

By Press Gazette

Hull Daily Mail journalist Jane Harper is filing a daily video blog, diary and photographs to her paper from the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

Harper, the Mail’s East Riding Council reporter, had to take three weeks intensive training to take part in the race from Liverpool to Brazil. The Mail’s in-house team has created a website Raceforglory.co.uk, especially for Harper’s multimedia reports from the Hull and Humber Clipper, which has been fitted with state-of-the-art satellite equipment.

Senior assistant editor Paul Hartley said: ‘This is the chance of a lifetime for Jane but it’s also a great opportunity to provide some genuinely compelling content in words, photos and video.

‘It’s been a very steep learning curve for everyone involved. As well as learning to sail, Jane has had to master new skills to be able to film, edit and send her content from the boat.

‘The newsdesk can’t simply pick up the phone and talk to her, so we’ve had to come up with some different ways of operating to keep in touch and give her feedback. The videos, including one of dolphins shadowing the boat, have really helped to bring the race to life.”

Harper added: ‘There have been times when I’ve wondered what I’ve let myself in for, because you spend a lot of time wet, cold and tired. But it’s also great fun and hopefully the coverage will provide a really good record of our experiences on board.”
