House & Garden has produced a special supplement and launched a campaign for Water Aid to celebrate the 10-year reign of editor Susan Crewe.
The 90-page supplement, Design Highlights of a Decade, appears with the June issue. It features 10 inspirational houses and five gardens that have appeared in the past 10 years.
The title also hopes to raise thousands of pounds for charity Water Aid and is appealing to readers to host a fundraising party.
Crewe said: “I am constantly featuring writing about kitchens, bathrooms and water features and water is something we take for granted.
Meanwhile, there are 1.1 billion people in the world who do not have safe drinking water, so to celebrate my 10 years as editor, I am asking people to give a fundraising party. It can be a picnic for five people or a barbecue for 500 people.”
“We have 1.4 million readers and I suppose my target is for all our readers to give a party. It’s an impossibly high target, but why not? I hope to have parties in California, South America – wherever we are read and enjoyed,” Crewe added.
House & Garden will run the campaign over the summer and hopes to receive all donations by the end of September. A booklet has been produced with recipe and party ideas.
Crewe began her career as “Jennifer” on Jennifer’s Diary in Harpers & Queen, before being offered the editorship of House & Garden by Condé Nast managing director Nicholas Coleridge.
“He called me and said, ‘I think it’s time you came to Condé Nast.’ I didn’t know the first thing about editing,” she said.
Crewe hopes to last as long as her predecessor, who took “early retirement” from House & Garden at the age of 83. “I love it. I come in to the office and just burst out laughing,” she said.
