Dominic Ponsford
Chairwoman of the Guardian-owning Scott Trust Liz Forgan headed the list of journalism-related recipients of New Year honours.
Forgan
is a former women’s editor of the paper and is also chairman of the
Heritage Lottery Fund. She was made a dame for services to broadcasting
and heritage.
Guardian Northern Ireland correspondent in the
early 1970s Simon Winchester was made an OBE for services to journalism
and literature. After a career as a foreign correspondent he went on to
write a series of historical best sellers. Also made an OBE was
film-maker and broadcaster Roger Graef.
BBC journalist Peter Snow was awarded the CBE for services to broadcasting.
Snow
is famous for his election night coverage and his manning of the
swingometer and use of other, increasingly high-tech visual aids. His
covered his first general election in 1974 for ITN before moving to the
BBC in 1979.
Snow announced his decision to stand down from news in October in order to concentrate on documentary work.
Other
journalism related honours include MBEs for William Chisholm, for
services to the newspaper industry, and for Marjorie Deane, founder of
the Marjorie Deane Financial Journalism Foundation, for services to the
Finance Industry. Executive marketing director of the Jewish Chronicle
Melvyn Weinberg was also awarded the MBE, for services to the Newspaper
Industry. Former BBC controller, editorial policy, Stephen Whittle was
awarded the OBE.
