The Hold the Front Page website has apologised and agreed to pay compensation to an editor falsely described on the site as being a press officer for the British National Party.
Danny Lockwood, editor of the Dewsbury and District Press, took legal action against Northcliffe-produced Hold the Front Page after it was wrongly stated on the site’s “Who’s Who” section that he was the press officer for the BNP “from 1993-present”.
In an agreed statement, Hold the Front Page said it accepted that the allegation was and is totally false. “Mr. Lockwood tells us that he has never been the Press Officer for the BNP, or a supporter of the BNP and that he does not hold racist political views.
“As soon as we were informed that this information was incorrect, we removed the statement from our website. We apologise for any embarrassment caused and have agreed compensation with Mr. Lockwood.”
Lockwood, who is also to receive his legal costs, told Press Gazette: “I am really glad that it’s all over and out of the way. We still don’t know how it got into the site.”
He would not comment on the size of his compensation other than to say: “I am not retiring and it has not radically changed the Christmas shopping.”
