Hockey scribes honour triple gold medallist

By Press Gazette

Triple Olympic gold medallist Balbir Singh has been made an Honour Life Member of the Hockey Writers’ Club.

Balbir
rose to fame at the 1948 Olympic Games in London. He spearheaded
India’s attack in the final against Great Britain where he won his
first gold. He went on to win further gold medals in Helsinki in 1952
and Melbourne in 1956.

Balbir has continued to remain closely
associated with the game, coaching the Indian side that won the World
Cup in Kuala Lumpur in 1975.

His 1977 autobiography, The Golden Hat Trick – My Hockey Days, gives an insight into the life of a hockey legend.

The
presentation was made by officers from the Hockey Writers’ Club, led by
chairman Patrick Rowley and secretary Dil Bahra, at Southgate Hockey
Club.
