The editors of two major Scottish papers, the former boss of one of the UK’s biggest newspaper groups, a judge and a leading politician gathered for a special reunion of journalists from one of Scotland’s oldest titles.
Staff who worked at The Falkirk Herald over the past five decades met for the get-together in Polmont – a few miles from where the newspaper is printed.
Among the other ex-employees present were Bruce Waddell, recently appointed editor of the Daily Record, and David Hamilton, editor of the Scottish Daily Express.
Freddy Johnston, former head of Johnston Press, the company that owns The Falkirk Herald, attended the event. His family founded the publishing company in Falkirk in 1767.
Falkirk’s Sheriff, Albert Sheehan, and MSP Dennis Canavan were guests of honour and delivered speeches to the 40-strong group.
The get-together – organised by former Herald reporters Marjory Kenny, Julie Hutchison, Peter Samson and David McCarthy – raised about £1,400 for charity, which will be split between Strathcarron Hospice and Cancer Research.
Samson said: “It was a great chance to catch up with people some of us hadn’t seen for as long as 15 to 20 years.
“Former colleagues travelled from as far afield as London and Somerset especially for the event.
“The extra bonus from the evening was the money we raised for two very worthwhile causes.”
