Hendry to edit Sun Woman

By Press Gazette

Sharon Hendry

Sharon Hendry is The Sun’s new woman’s editor, succeeding Vicki Grimshaw, who is leaving the paper.

Sinead Desmond will be her second in command and Martel Maxwell is moving from the City page to join Sun Woman as a feature writer.

Hendry, who moves up from deputy woman’s editor, is a former "Hall’s Angel" – one of the coterie of young women writers brought together by Phil Hall when he edited the News of the World.

While working as a reporter in her first job with the Bucks Free Press, she answered an advertisement in Press Gazette and landed the NoW job.

"I went from covering council meetings to swingers’ parties," she said.

After that she spent six months at the Daily Mail as a reporter – "a baptism of fire", said Hendry – before joining The Sun in 1999.

She believes her new job to be an important one for the women’s input it will have in the paper.

"I grew up reading The Sun and I love what it stands for. There aren’t too many female executives on the paper at the moment and it will be good to add another female voice," she said.

David Boyle, Sun night picture editor, is moving to the New York Post as picture editor.
