Exeter Express & Echo editor Steve Hall has been appointed
editor of his hometown newspaper, the Derby Evening Telegraph. He
replaces Mike Norton, who became editor-in-chief at the Bristol Evening
Post after former editor Mike Lowe was axed.
Hall is no stranger to the Telegraph, having worked for the paper
for eight years as news editor, chief sub-editor and assistant editor.
He
joined the Echo from the Nottingham Evening Post, where he was deputy
editor. Under Hall’s eight-year editorship, the Echo won Press
Gazette’s evening newspaper of the year award. In 2002, it picked up
scoop of the year for its story during the foot and mouth outbreak
about a calf named Phoenix that had survived for five days next to its
dead mother, and prompted national campaigns to save it.
The
Telegraph’s circulation is almost double that of the Echo at 50,133,
down 3.4 per cent – about the industry average – on the previous year.
Hall
said: “This is a tremendous opportunity to go back and edit the
newspaper in my home town and I’m delighted, but at the same time sad
to leave Devon, where I have had much success both professionally and
personally.”
He takes up his position on 8 August.

separate Northcliffe appointments, Alex Leys, managing director at the
Nottingham Post Group, is taking up the same position at the Leicester
Mercury Group, following the retirement of Tony Hill. He is replaced by
Malcolm Pheby, managing director at the Lincolnshire Publishing
Company, and David Waghorne replaces Pheby.
