Guardian success

By Press Gazette

Following 10 months of campaigning, the Middleton Guardian has succeeded in helping to save the only remaining school in Middleton from closure.

Last year, Sunny Brow Nursery in Manchester had been earmarked for closure by Rochdale Council, provoking protest from parents, teachers, former pupils and local councillors.

Chief reporter at the weekly, Dave Edwards, co-ordinated the Save Sunny Brow campaign, accompanied by a petition printed in the paper.

A decision-making meeting has now ruled that the nursery school should stay open.

Guardian editor Gerry Sammon said: “It proves that local newspapers can be powerful allies for just causes.”
