Guardian Monthly ceases publication

By Press Gazette

The 10 staff working at The Guardian’s short-lived experiment into publishing an international monthly magazine are to be offered other work.

Guardian Monthly launched at the end of last year, edited by former Independent journalist Jessica Moore, and was available on selected newsstands and to subscribers throughout the world, priced €3.50 (£2.35).

The publication largely comprised lifestyle-themed content taken from Guardian and Observer magazines. Its June issue was its last.

A spokesman for Guardian News and Media said: ‘Guardian Monthly has some way to go before becoming profitable, and the board has concluded that resources would be better consolidated on Guardian News and Media’s other activities.”

In a letter to subscribers, publisher Will Ricketts said: ‘The company is taking a long-term strategic view of its activities, and although Guardian Monthly has performed well in the busy and competitive international marketplace, we have decided that this is not the right time to continue with a global magazine offering.”
