Sophie Goodchild, home affairs correspondent at The Independent on Sunday, has been named Mind Journalist of the Year for her reporting which led the paper’s mental health campaign.
Runner-up was John Howe, deputy news editor at the Sunderland Echo, for his series of articles covering the tragic deaths of patients at Cherry Knowle Hospital.
People columnist David Mellor won the Bigot of the Year Award for a column headed “Yes, lock them away BEFORE they strike”.
One of the judges said Goodchild’s “quality reporting, in particular stories on the scandal of the forgotten inmates of secure psychiatric hospitals, and coverage of the Government’s draft mental health bill, deserves the highest praise”.
They gave a special commendation to Emma Morton for her article in The Sun, which looked at the often misreported issue of personality disorders.
