General’s gaffe prompts Today apology

By Press Gazette

By Caitlin Pike
BBC Radio 4’s Today programme broadcast an apology 20
minutes after a gaffe was made on air by contributor, General Patrick
Cordingley, this morning.

General Cordingley, who was speaking about military matters, offended a
large number of listeners by using the phrase ‘nigger in a woodpile’.

A BBC spokesman said: “It was clear from the
number of calls and e
mails that came into the programme after the General had used the
phrase that many listeners were offended.” Twenty minutes later an
apology was read out on the programme: “Earlier in the programme one of
our contributors used a phrase that many of you found offensive.
General Patrick Cordingley wishes to apologise for using the phrase
and any offence he has caused.”

One listener of the programme who heard the General say the phrase on
air said: “It just jumped out as being inappropriate and offensive.”
