Gabriel contracts cause media storm

By Press Gazette

Photographers are being urged to boycott the European tour of rock star Peter Gabriel in a row over copyright, writes Jon Slattery.

The European Federation of Journalists claims the tour management is trying to grab control of photographers’ work.

It says the management company, Peter Gabriel Ltd, gives photographers permission to take photographs provided that they sign a very restrictive contract.

The contract allows pictures to be taken only from narrowly defined perspectives, gives photographers permission to use pictures once and in one media only and provides for the transfer of all authors’ rights to the tour management for unlimited use.

“The contract reflects a greedy mentality, it is completely incoherent and outside international law,” said Aidan White, general secretary of the federation.
