French intellectual warns of British press dumbing

By Press Gazette

Leading French intellectual and newspaper columnist Bernard-Henri Levy has warned Britain's quality press against moving downmarket.

Speaking to Press Gazette after his best-selling book American Vertigo was published in the UK, he said: "One specific problem in England is the importance of the tabloid press. Sometimes there is a sort of contamination from the tabloid press. You have the best newspapers in Europe — The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Observer, The Independent — they have to resist the temptation of the tabloid. There is a temptation towards tabloidisation, which would be suicide."
