Former Cherie Blair aide becomes fitness guru in Guardian changes

The Guardian has announced a series of senior appointments and extended the role of Fiona Millar, Cherie Blair’s former assistant, to be its new fitness guru.

Charlie English has been appointed arts editor, taking over from Dan Glaister who has become Los Angeles correspondent.

English joined the paper as a reporter on the arts desk in 1995 and has been Friday Review editor since 2001.

Merope Mills, who was feature writer of the year in the 1999 Guardian Student Media Awards, has been made editor of Friday Review.

Simon Rogers has been appointed editor of the paper’s weekly science supplement Life. He joined the Guardian Unlimited website as deputy editor from The Big Issue in 1999 and takes over from Emily Wilson, who is taking maternity leave.

Leslie Plommer has been given the new job of executive editor (features). Her role will combine story commissioning, long-term projects and staff management. She joined the paper in 1987 as a stringer reporting from Cyprus and the Middle East before moving to London in 1991 to work on the foreign desk. She became managing editor, foreign news, in 1994 and was the launch editor of the paper’s interior supplement, Space, in 1997. Libby Brooks becomes deputy comment editor and will job-share with current deputy comment editor Becky Gardiner. Brooks joined The Guardian in 1998 as women’s page deputy editor. .

Fiona Millar has been signed up to write a weekly column on fitness in the Weekend magazine. Millar also writes a monthly column on education for Education Guardian. Weekend editor Katharine Viner said: “Fiona is an absolute evangelist for fitness. She’ll make a perfect fitness guru for the magazine.”
