Football focus the key for Sport First

By Press Gazette

Sport First relaunched on Sunday with more pages, more colour and more football.

Pagination has increased from 40 to 48 and the title has decided to concentrate almost exclusively on football.

Coverage of the Nationwide League has been expanded to 20 pages, which the newspaper claims is twice that offered by the nationals.

Editorial director Chris Mann said: “We’ve survived a difficult period and now we are looking to expand – it’s that kind of market and people’s interest in football is just phenonmenal at the moment.

“We have expanded the results and stats to 14 pages, giving the football fan what we believe is an unrivalled package of information, which also benefits our new SoccerbetWise betting section. We’ve also reintroduced a quiz, crossword, fans forum and club news section.

“My aim over the next few weeks is to continue the updating of the paper to give it a complete makeover, throwing more colour on to the pages, simplifying the layout and design, using more pictures.”

Sport First publisher Keith Young has become editor-in-chief and has been strongly involved in the relaunch.

Sport First was launched in 1998 and had an ABC circulation of 97,670 at its peak in 2001. It is now produced out of the Press Association offices in Howden, Yorkshire and has an ABC figure of 27,117.
