Five offers jobs to 16 ITN journalists

By Press Gazette

Only 16 ITN journalists have been offered jobs on the new Five News bulletin to be run by Sky News next year, just over half of the 34 who applied, writes Wale Azeez.

Of the 10 on-screen reporters who applied, only four were offered positions on the new bulletin.

The employment offers were made by Five senior programme controller Chris Shaw and Sky’s Five News editor-elect Mark Calvert after the NUJ “reluctantly accepted” the transfer terms laid out by Five and ITN in the run-up to the end of their contract in January.

However, following the vote to accept last Friday, the union insisted it would reserve the right to challenge the terms under transfer of undertakings (protection of employment) legislation if the affected journalists were out of a job by the end of the year.

It also called for voluntary redundancy to be “opened across ITN” in line with its policy of no compulsory redundancies.
