First Merseyside media awards willboost charities

By Press Gazette

The Merseyside Media Network’s first journalism awards will take place on 11 June and will be a charity fundraiser.

The event, sponsored by Littlewoods, will be held at the Holiday Inn City Centre Lime Street in Liverpool.

Network founder-secretary Ken Bennett said: “There has been a truly impressive volume of quality entries and it promises to be a great celebration of journalist excellence on Merseyside.

“Every penny raised from ticket sales and raffles will go to charities chosen by the Forum, the Network’s steering committee.”

Local and national charities that will benefit from the awards night are the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, the Liverpool Echo’s Sunrise Fund, the BBC’s Charitable Trust, Radio City’s Give A Child A Chance and NPF – The Journalists’ Charity.

There are 10 award categories and the overall Merseyside Journalist of the Year will receive a prize of £500.

The judges are Susan Woodward OBE, director of regional affairs for ITV and creative director of Liverpool European Capital of Culture; and Tom Petrie, the legendary Fleet Street news editor and former northern news editor of the Daily Mail.
