Essentials and Family Circle editors swap jobs

By Press Gazette

The editors of two of IPC’s women’s titles, Essentials and Family Circle, are to swap jobs, writes Ruth Addicott.

The move coincides with plans to reposition Family Circle in a bid to boost sales with a revamp in the October issue.

Julie Barton-Breck, currently editor of Family Circle, will become editor of Essentials and Karen Livermore, editor of Essentials, will transfer to Family Circle. The switch will take place on 11 October and both editors said they were looking forward to the challenge.

Barton-Breck has edited Family Circle for 18 months, having previously worked on the Safeway magazine and Prima. Livermore has edited Essentials for seven years having joined from The Daily Star.

It is not the first time two editors in the same company have done a job swap – rival titles She and Zest, published by The National Magazine Company, did the same in 2002. Both titles underwent a revamp and reported a lift in sales as a result.

IPC said the swap would bring “fresh insight” to Essentials and Family Circle and generate a new impetus.

It is understood that the move could result in a further shake-up, however, as the respective editors put their new strategies in place.
