The BBC has collected a major prize for its commitment to the environment.
Sian Kevill, BBC World’s editorial director, collected the Zayed International Prize for the Environment on behalf of the BBC at a ceremony in Dubai last Monday.
She said she was honoured to collect the prize “on behalf of the many BBC reporters who travel to extraordinary places and take extraordinary risks to bring us news about what’s happening to the planet”.
The $500,000 (£270,000) prize, which is awarded every two years for pioneering contributions towards the environment, was named after the president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a keen environmentalist.
It was first awarded in 2001 to former US president Jimmy Carter, for his work in poverty reduction
