The news team for Emap’s Manchester-based radio stations have broken up a virtual BBC monopoly of news broadcast nominations for this year’s Sony Radio Academy Awards.
The Key 103 and Magic 1152 news team were the only independent radio stations nominated. The team is up for the news broadcaster award against Edward Stourton, BBC current affairs and BBC Manchester (Religion & Ethics) for Radio 4; Julian Worricker and Victoria Derbyshire, BBC News for Radio Five Live; Lyse Doucet for BBC World Service; and Mark Murphy for BBC Radio Suffolk.
The news coverage award is being contested by two nominations for Radio 4’s Today programme; BBC Radio Scotland’s report on the firefighters’ strike; the Six O’Clock News’s report on the death of the Queen Mother; and The Road To Jenin, produced by BBC Newsgathering for Radio 1, Radio 4 and BBC Radio Five Live.
News programme nominees are: BBC Radio Five Live, with A Mother’s Journey produced by All Out Productions; BBC Radio 1 with Tour of Duty by BBC Radio News; BBC World Service for an episode of Assignment produced by BBC News; plus two programmes from Radio 4, produced by BBC Current Affairs.
BBC Radio Derby and BBC Radio Foyle are the only regional teams up for the news output award, against two Radio Five Live nominations and Radio 1’s Newsbeat.
Five Live News Programmes, BBC Sport, BBC Radio Cumbria and Capital Gold Sport contest the sports award.
The awards ceremony is at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, on 8 May.
