The Economist won three awards to lead the list of winners at Business Journalist of the Year Awards, which were awarded last night at the Royal Courts of Justice in London. The BBC and the Sunday Times collecting two awards each.
Bill Emmott, who recently stepped downafter 13 years as the Economist’s editor, was given the "Decade of Excellence" Award, beating out Peter Day of the BBC, Lucy Kellaway of the Financial Times, and Carol Loomis of Fortune.
In his acceptance speech, Emmott thanked outgoing Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi, who had been a frequent target of criticism from the Economist. Berlusconi once referred to the famously liberal Economist as a "Communist magazine" and likened Emmott to Lenin.
Economist economics editor Pam Woodall won Best Economics Journalist and Tom Easton of the Economist’s New York bureau, won Best Finance and Markets Journalist.
Evan Davis won the "Best Communicator" for a story on the BBC web site. A Radio Five Live team consisting of Jeff Randall, Sonali Gudka, Louise Birt, Martin Bedford and Bob Shennan won the Best Deadline or Breaking News story for a package about Rover.
The Sunday Times’s Mark Kleinman, Peter Koenig and Patrick Masters also took home awards.
Kleinman won Best Scoop for his story about the planned takeover of P&O by a Dubai-based company. Koenig and Masters won Best Newspaper Story for a report about the offshore leveraged buyout firm CVC Capital Partners.

Best Newspaper Story: Peter Koenig, Patrick Masters, The Sunday Times, "Buyout firm’s offshore secrets"
Best Online or Wire Service Journalist or Team: Juliane von Reppert-Bismarck, Dow Jones Newswires, "Trade wars create new advocates, enemies"
