DVD sales behind Empire web rejig

By Press Gazette

Empire has relaunched its website following the massive growth in DVD sales.

It is the first overhaul for the movie magazine’s site since its launch in 1996. It has been timed to coincide with a series of big film events this month, including the BAFTAs, the Oscars and Empire’s own awards.

Empire Online editor Catherine Hanly said: “The whole DVD industry has gone crazy. UK sales of DVDs went up by 75 per cent last year so we wanted to make it easier for readers to look for DVDs and films. We will be reflecting the direction in which the magazine is moving much more closely,” she said.

The site has been made easier to use and film reviews have been split into two categories – “In Cinema” and “At Home”, to reflect the popularity of home entertainment.

The site has expanded its UK release dates section, as well as its coverage of cast details and rumours on upcoming films, and the site is now more interactive, adding more readers comments from readers on breaking news stories.

Empire Online attracts 4.5m page impressions every month and has 380,000 unique users.
