Dewsbury title has birthday circulation rise

By Press Gazette

The Dewsbury and District Press is celebrating its fourth birthday by increasing its distribution by more than 80 per cent.

The Press combines a paid-for sale of 1,567 with a free distribution of 14,859 copies each week. This will increase to more than 30,000 on 4 March, the paper’s birthday.

Danny Lockwood, who launched the weekly single-handedly in 2002, said: "The Press really is a paid-for paper wearing a ‘free’ suit. We have editorial ratios comfortably over 50 per cent, and a grown-up approach to news coverage which few weeklies can live with. It’s proved hugely popular with readers and advertisers alike."

The Press was named best free weekly for the Northeast, Northwest and Yorkshire in 2005 by the Newspaper Society.

Lockwood revealed to Press Gazette that he has a new stand-alone product in the pipeline which he said would "raise a few eyebrows in the industry, and raise some temperatures in the big regional publishers’ board rooms!"

Circular Distribution has taken on the Press’s free distribution operation.
