Former Travel Trade Gazette editor Phil Davies has set up as an independent travel consultant.
Davies quit TTG after 19 years this summer over radical plans to differentiate it from its rival, Travel Weekly. He refused to elaborate on his departure this week but said he planned to continue his involvement in the travel industry, writing and offering advice to companies on how to communicate with journalists.
Davies said he had negotiated three contracts: the first will use his expertise in organising and publicising travel events and the others will draw on his knowledge of the industry.
He said he had been thinking of making the break from editing for some time. “I feel that the travel industry is set for a revival and I want to be part of the success story.
“I see this as an opportunity to combine my journalistic and editorial skills to provide a service for travel and travel-related companies. “It will involve acting in an advisory capacity to writing and bits of PR. What it isn’t is pure freelance travel writing,” he said.
Davies’s departure came five months after the arrival of TTG’s new publisher, Ben Greenish, who wanted to rebuild the magazine’s profile with advertisers in the wake of September 11 and the war in Iraq.
