Daily Mail sees its sales in Scotland increase again

By Press Gazette

The Scottish Daily Mail increased its sales in April for the third month this year.

The ABC’s Scottish actively purchased sales figures reveal the paper sold 129,066 copies last month – 9,956 more than April 2003, an increase of 8.4 per cent.

The Scottish Daily Express also saw its circulation rise year on year – by 4.4 per cent to 82,558. The Scottish Star’s 10p cover price helped it reach 103,811 – 44,087 copies and 73.8 per cent up on April 2003. However, the decision to double its cover price to 20p two weeks ago will put it under pressure to maintain its success story in May.

Among the broadsheets, The Independent, which moved completely to compact format on Monday, was up 77.2 per cent year on year – selling an extra 3,750 copies in Scotland at 8,609.

The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian all had decreasing sales while The Times dropped 12.4 per cent – down 3,557 copies to 25,095.

The Independent on Sunday had a 24.3 per cent increase to 6,403 and Sunday Times Scotland was up 2.4 per cent to 80,639. Scotland on Sunday was up 0.2 per cent to 77,348.

In the Scottish Sunday tabloid market, The People increased sales by 35.6 per cent – up 12,535 to 47,717, while its sister paper the Sunday Mirror dropped 11,722 copies to 48,723.
