Journalists at Trinity Mirror Southern’s Enfield Advertiser offices held a one-day strike on Wednesday and plan another three-day stoppage starting from 10 January.
They are protesting at editorial cuts caused by centralising the subbing operation and copy-sharing between titles on features.Nine staff were said to be involved in Wednesday’s stoppage, which also affected the Enfield Gazette , Barnet Press and Haringey Advertiser .
NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear said: “Such drastic cost-cutting measures threaten the quality of the papers and will leave the community poorly served. We will look to the local community who have been well-served by these titles to stand with us in protecting local journalism.”
A spokesman for Trinity Mirror said: “We believe the strike is a totally disproportionate response given the actual scale of the changes. One permanent member of staff is being made redundant, and we will have exactly the same number of reporting and photographic staff on the front-line as we did just over 12 months ago.
“It is utterly wrong to suggest that the changes threaten the quality of our newspapers.
“Only five members of staff voted in favour of action and overall it’s very much business as usual. Production of our newspapers will not be affected.”
