Cowan takes helm as Retail Express editor

By Press Gazette

Retail Express has appointed Philip Cowan, former editor of the Clydebank Post, as its new editor. He takes over from former editor Nick Hudson, who moved to the Coalville Times in Leicestershire.

The move signals a return to journalism for Cowan, who has spent the past six months as a full-time lecturer teaching students on the “no sweat” journalism course in London. Prior to that he worked for The Herald in Glasgow.

Cowan said he had no plans to reposition Retail Express or make any changes to the editorial team.

Published fortnightly by Newtrade Publishing, the magazine is read by professionals in the convenience retail market, and distributed free to more than 50,000 convenience stores throughout the UK.

“Newtrade Publishing wants to take the newspaper forward and it has big plans for it to do well, so it’s a good opportunity, coming into something that is growing.

‘We will probably do a redesign as we go along, we won’t have a D-Day where we completely change everything,” he said.

Retail Express sits alongside Retail Newsagent and The Fed, the magazine for members of the National Federation of Retail Newsagents.

Cowan’s appointment coincides with that of Chris Morgan who has joined the company as non-executive director.
