Coverage of young people must show more balance

By Press Gazette

Do we give young people a fair press? According to research carried out by Young People Now magazine, 71 per cent of all newspaper stories on young people are negative and one third are about crime. Statistics which in no way reflect the reality of teenagers’ place in society.

Newspapers have greater powers than ever – quite rightly – to name and shame anti-social and criminal youths. This must not stop. But, as the Hull Daily Mail has shown with its new youth sports pullout, there is another side too.We must look long and hard to make sure we reflect the overall picture more fairly.
