Ofcom has awarded new FM local commercial radio licences for Belfast and Cornwall.
The Belfast licence has gone to U105, owned by Ulster Television.
The licence for Cornwall was awarded to Atlantic FM, owned by the Tindle Radio Group’s Atlantic Broadcasting.
U105 promises a personality-led station aimed primarily at over-45s in Belfast and the surrounding area.
It will offer music and topical speech to around 750,000 adults.
However, a spokesperson for the station said it had not confirmed where its news service would come from.

Bailie, the chairman of U105, said: “U105 will appeal primarily to
those aged over 45 living in Belfast and the surrounding area.
“Seven
out of 10 listeners in this age group do not currently listen to local
commercial radio and we plan to change that with U105, which aims to be
on air by early 2006.”
Atlantic FM aims to provide locallyfocused
news, information and speech content with adult-oriented popular music
for a broad audience, with particular appeal for listeners aged 25-54.
It will broadcast to the region’s adult population of around 400,000 people.
