Gideon Mendel, a documentary photographer who covers social issues such as Aids, has signed a representation agreement with photographic agency Corbis.
Mendel has been a regular contributor to publications such as The Guardian Weekend, National Geographic, Cond̩ Nast Traveller and Fortune magazine. He has also worked with prominent not-for-profit organisations such as M̩decins Sans Fronti̬res, Christian Aid, Crisis and The Big Issue. His book, A Broken Landscape РHIV and Aids in Africa, has recently been published with development agency Action Aid.
“I believe that my work on social issues, particularly my documentation of the Aids epidemic in Africa, should be disseminated as widely as possible. This relationship with Corbis will ensure far greater visibility of those images and immediate access to editors and organisations around the world,” he said.
As well as taking photographs, Mendel plans to write and develop the use of audio. “He is a great example of the type of high-calibre, multimedia-skilled journalist that we want to work with at Corbis,” said general manager for Corbis UK Martin Ellis. “His profile as both a photographic activist and as an artist promise to make his contributions unique. Gideon is one of the most important visual storytellers working today. He adds strong writing skills to a sophisticated eye to produce compelling essays about the most critical social issues of our time,” said Brian Storm, Corbis vice-president of news and editorial photography.
Over the past 10 years Mendel has won six World Press Awards, the POY Canon Photo Essay Award and The Eugene Smith Award for Humanistic Photography.
