Consumer magazine ABCs: Total circulation up, but newsstand and subscriptions down

By Dominic Ponsford

While total circulation of the UK’s 271 ABC-audited consumer magazines went up in the first six months of this year – newsstand and subscription sales were down.

Press Gazette’s analysis of the figures shows that total per issue circulation stood at 46.2m for these titles in the first six months of this year – compared with 46m in the same period a year ago.

Looking just at newsstand and single copy magazine sales (so not including various free and customer magazines) – sales are declining across the board. Though some sectors – such as news and current affairs and children’s titles – are still growing.

Press Gazette’s analysis shows total per-issue newsstand and single copy magazine sales down from 27,201,012 in the first six months of 2010 to 25,269,633 in the first six months of this year. That’s a drop of 7.1 per cent year on year which puts magazines in the same predicament on the newsstand as newspapers.

The picture for paid-for subscriptions is looking a lot more stable.

In the first six-months of this year, the UK’s ABC-audited consumer magazines sold 6,413,053 paid-for subscriptions versus 6,574,335 in same period a year ago – a year-on-year decline of 2.5 per cent.
