CNN launches bursary scheme to honour cameraman Amin

By Press Gazette

CNN has established a three-year bursary to the Mohamed Amin Foundation’s Television Training Centre.

This move is to coincide with the celebration of the network’s 25th anniversary. Beginning next year, the bursary will provide an annual scholarship to the television training centre and also the Journalism School, both based in Nairobi, Kenya.

The bursary is in honour of the late Mohamed Amin, an award-winning cameraman and news producer, who died in a plane crash in 1996.

It was Chris Cramer, CNN International’s managing director who – in 1985, while a BBC News executive – assigned Amin to work alongside Michael Buerk for their now famous coverage of the Ethiopian famine.

“There could be no better tribute to Mo, his work and ideals, than for CNN to establish these bursaries,” Cramer said.

The award is part of a pledge by CNN to increase its investment in training journalists and journalism safety, the broadcaster explained.

It already sponsors or supports the Rory Peck Foundation in the UK, the International News Safety Institute, the African Journalist of the Year Award and the Young Journalist Award in South Asia.
