One of the UK’s few remaining family-owned newspapers, the Barnsley Chronicle, is celebrating the best sales figures in its history.
Circulation of the seven-edition broadsheet was up three per cent for July-December 2002, taking its average weekly ABC to 42,540.
The Chronicle, founded in 1858 and owned by the Hewitt family, has been selling up to 46,000 copies in recent weeks after nearly 10 years of consistent rises.
Group editor Robert Cockroft said the increase had been helped by sustained interest in the fortunes of Barnsley Football Club, which was rescued from closure last year in a contentious buy-out by the mayor.
