The Wall Street Journal Europe’s Brian Carney has won this year’s $7,000 (£4,100) Frédéric Bastiat Prize.
The Brussels-based editorial writer was praised for articles on Andorra’s resistance to the EU Tax Savings Directive, France Telecom and how the WorldCom and Enron disasters actually demonstrate the strengths of capitalism.
The Frédéric Bastiat Prize is awarded by the International Policy Network to recognise writers whose work promotes “the institutions of a free society”.
Second prize went to Stephen Pollard, who writes for The Times, The Independent and The Wall Street Journal Europe.
The prize is named after a 19th century French philosopher and proponent of free trade.
