Eve Cameron, founding editor of Zest and the current editor of She, is leaving The National Magazine Company after 15 years.
Having interviewed Tony Blair for a feature in She recently, Cameron admitted that it was talking to the Prime Minister that had prompted her to quit.
“I blame the Prime Minister, who did say that he didn’t get the work-life balance right,” she said. The team at She were taken back by the news, but Cameron said: “It is a hell of a long time and it genuinely is a wrench to leave after all these years but it is a genuine desire to do something different.” Cameron said she wanted to attempt a novel, do some consultancy work and devote more time to writing. “I miss writing, I don’t do enough as editor. And I’d like to get to the bottom of my laundry bin,” she joked.
Cameron worked in the beauty trade press before joining Cosmopolitan as beauty editor and then becoming beauty director.
It was while she was at Cosmo that she came up with the idea for a new women’s health and lifestyle magazine, Zest.
She subsequently launched and edited the magazine for six years, until 2001 when she agreed to do a job swap and take on the editorship of She magazine.
Duncan Edwards, managing director of NatMags, said Cameron had made an “enormous contribution” to the company and she has agreed to stay on at She until a new editor is appointed.
