Brooklands closes ‘Place’ spin-offs

By Press Gazette

The Brooklands Group has closed its three spin-off titles to Channel 4 magazine, A Place in the Sun, blaming changes in the international property market and a decline in advertising in traditional holiday home destinations.

Editorial from the three magazines — A Place in the Sun's everything France, A Place in the Sun's everything Spain and A Place in the Sun's everything America — will be merged into the parent publication, which will look at the market in a broader sense.

The company said this wider focus suited property buyers who now looked for homes beyond the established hotspots.

A spokesperson said: "A lot of people are going into the international property market these days with not so fixed ideas of where they want to buy."

A declining advertising market in areas such as Spain contributed to the decision to close the titles.

"It's harder to sell a specific number of advertising pages to a specific country and we're reflecting a trend that international estate agents have experienced, where it's difficult to be a vendor in a single country," the spokesperson added.

The publisher will keep on a number of staff for editorial supplements it plans as additions to A Place in the Sun, but 13 editorial positions will go as a result of the closure. The spokesperson said they expected most of the staff affected to be redeployed within the company.

The group's most recent launch was the official magazine of Supernanny, Channel 4's modern day Mary Poppins programme, at the end of April.
