The body of Terry Lloyd, the ITN reporter killed in southern Iraq, arrived back in Britain in the early hours of Saturday, to RAF Brize Norton.
An inquest into his death opened on Tuesday. Coroner Nicholas Gardiner said Lloyd was “caught between cross fire of opposing forces and died from injuries received”.
Lloyd’s family are planning a private funeral and ITN said a memorial service will be held at a later date.
Lloyd was killed when the convoy he was travelling in came under fire near Basra. He is the first ITN journalist killed in a war. His colleagues, ITN cameraman Fred Nerac and local translator Hussein Othman, are still officially missing after the incident.
Cameraman Daniel Demoustier was injured as the crew drove towards the key southern city in two vehicles, but escaped and was later rescued by fellow journalists. Earlier, ITN accused coalition forces of covering up the circumstances surrounding Lloyd’s death.
