Board role for Guardian web chief Emily Bell

By Press Gazette

Editor-in-chief of Guardian Unlimited Emily Bell has been promoted to the Guardian Newspapers board and been given the new title of director of digital content.

Bell’s promotion reflects the success of the Guardian Unlimited website, which she has edited for six years. It currently has an audited readership of 13.1 million “unique users” per month – making it the top UK newspaper website.

Bell began her career as a trainee for International Thomson Business Publishing in 1987 before joining Campaign Magazine in 1988 as a business reporter. She joined The Observer in 1990 as a media business reporter before becoming deputy business editor in 1995 and then business editor in 1997.

She become editor of MediaGuardian.co.uk in 2000 before being promoted to overall editor of Guardian Unlimited.

Guardian Media Group chief executive Carolyn McCall said: “Emily
has an unparalleled grasp of the digital challenges and opportunities media
companies are facing, and a clear vision for the multimedia development of
Guardian, Observer and GU content.

“She is widely regarded as one of the
UK’s leading digital thinkers and will be a major asset to the GNL board”

Bell replaces Simon Waldman, who has joined the board of Guardian Newspapers parent company Guardian Media Group.

Bell becomes one of four journalists on the 13-strong GNL board. The others are Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, Observer editor Roger Alton and Guardian managing editor Chris Elliott.
