Blueprint editor quits for new projects

By Press Gazette

The editor of design and architecture magazine Blueprint is leaving to pursue other projects.

Grant Gibson said he was keeping his options open and was hoping to freelance. “I’ve got a young family and I’m working over the other side of London. I’m eager to see a bit more of them,” he said.

He has worked for Blueprint publisher ETP, a subsidiary of business magazine publisher Wilmington, for nine years, having previously been deputy editor of FX Magazine.

Gibson’s departure comes as ETP is facing increased competition from Icon, a direct rival to Blueprint, set up by ex-ETP staff working for independent company Media 10.

While Icon claims to take a more “tongue-in-cheek” approach to design and architecture, both titles are competing for sales on the news-stands.

Media 10 is planning another launch in February – a monthly consumer magazine based on the Channel 4 programme Grand Designs and edited by David Redhead, former managing editor of Blueprint.

The 164-page title will be aimed at the television show’s 4.3m viewers and feature ideas on how to build a dream home, landscaping a garden and refitting a kitchen. It will sit alongside existing home interest titles on the news-stands.

Media 10 publisher Richard Morey said it would have an emphasis on “real people in real homes”. Grand Designs presenter Mike McCloud will be a regular contributor.

The company is in the process of putting a team together for the launch, based at Redhead’s studio in Battersea, South London.

Clare Gogerty former production/ copy chief at In Style, is deputy editor and Sarah Horrocks, former art director on Company, and Helen Bratby (ex-Country Living) are on board as design consultants.

Redhead is looking for a full-time features editor, editorial assistant and art director. The title will have a print run of 120,000 to 150,000 and a cover price of £3.
