Blackpool Gazette scoops top award

The Gazette, Blackpool, was named regional newspaper of the year in the Newspaper Society awards held in Birmingham on Monday night.

Two awards were scooped by the Bristol Evening Post, named campaigning daily of the year for its Save Our Streets campaign, which has helped cut street crime in the city by 20 per cent. Reporter Chris Maguire added to its success by winning journalist of the year.

The Tamworth Herald was campaigning weekly paper for its fight to honour two forgotten war heroes.

Young journalist of the year was James Fuller of the Cambridge Evening News for his coverage of the Soham murders, including an exclusive interview with Kevin Wells, father of murdered schoolgirl Holly Wells. Photographer of the year was Dave Charnley of the Teesside Evening Gazette. The Yorkshire Post and Nottingham Evening Post shared the award for best design and layout.
