The signatures of thousands of Birmingham Evening Mail readers have been presented at 10 Downing Street as part of a campaign to save more than 150 years of train building in the city.
Almost 1,500 jobs are at risk after Alstom announced it planned to close its Birmingham factory, which has manufactured 90 per cent of the underground trains in Britain. The paper joined forces with workers, launching a ‘Don’t let Alstom go down the tube’ campaign.
The result was a 10,000 strong petition calling for the management to change their minds, presented to No 10 by Alstom workers and Evening Mail political editor Shaun Connelly.
