The Andover Advertiser has recruited the author of bestselling sports book The History of Non-League Football Grounds as its sports editor.
Kerry Miller, 47, has had 10 sports books published, including the bestseller published in 1996 by Polar Print Group Ltd and the club histories including Yeovil Town and Bath City.
Miller, who joins the paper from Frome Town Football Club, where he was general manager, will be responsible for writing, designing and subbing the sports pages. He said: “This is a great opportunity as the sport is very successful in the area and I love to watch almost any sport.
“We have strong hockey and rugby teams that have both won the county cup and our cricket club is in one of the top leagues in the country. It really is a sportsman’s dream.”
Miller’s first editing job was on a Somerset-based magazine Team Talk, where he was joint editor for a short time before becoming editor of football title Non-League Monthly, where he stayed for a year.
From there he got a job as sports editor at weekly paper the Somerset Standard and Guardian, where he remained for nearly five years. “I owe all I know about sports editing to the then editor David Summers,” said Miller.
Following the appointment of another editor, Miller moved on to the daily paper South Wales Argus, where he realised that daily sports journalism was not for him. This led him to take up the job at the Andover Advertiser.
“I believe that weeklies have much more of a personal touch,” he explained. “It is often like a conveyor belt on daily newspapers – churning out the same type of stories – but with weeklies you have much more time to think about what you are writing. I pride myself on my pages looking relatively symmetrical and well designed.”
