Games from this summer’s World Cup will be available live on the internet from the BBC.
As part of a deal with the company responsible for marketing the broadcast rights to the World Cup, the BBC will stream all the group-stage and knockout-stage matches that the corporation has rights to broadcast. The BBC will also make four-minute clips from all of the 64 matches available on demand.
The streams will only be available to broadband internet users based in the UK. BBC director of Sport Roger Mosey said: “Our audiences now expect to get BBC Sport on television, on radio and online – and the World Cup on broadband is our biggest commitment yet to bringing people major events where and when they want them.
Mosey continued: “We know a lot of online viewing is done in the office, so we suspect this will allow people both to do their job and to keep up with the very latest action from Germany.”
Last week, the BBC announced that it will provide UK broadband users with access to coverage of five courts during the 2006 Wimbledon tennis championships.
The BBC also has broadband rights to the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
