The BBC is to honour news journalists and crews who have lost their lives in the line of duty, by erecting a sculpture on top of the newly refurbished Broadcasting House in London.
The sculpture, dedicated to BBC and non-corporation journalists, will shoot a beam of light 3,000ft above the skyline.
The memorial sculpture, called Breathing – “inspired by the breath of life of the building and all who work in it” – is by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa and will be inaugurated in 2005 as part of a public art programme associated with the Broadcasting House complex.
The sculpture will be a 33ft inverted glass spire, engraved with a poem – still to be selected – that will rise from the fifth floor roof of Broadcasting House. At night, the cone will glow with the light beam projected into the sky.
At street level, the public will be able to read the poem in text and Braille, accompanied by complementary audio work by Plensa and a relief version of the sculpture.
