The BBC has taken advantage of 52 years’ worth of news coverage by launching a website to showcase some of its more significant stories over the period.
Called On This Day, the site (www.bbc.co.uk/onthisday), which launched on Monday, provides audio and video footage as well as text-based stories, dating back to 1950. Stories are written as if the news has just happened, launching with President John F Kennedy’s inauguration in 1961, as its first lead story.
The site also links the features to related stories, such as Kennedy’s assassination and that of his brother Robert.
Each story is accompanied by an ‘in context’ boxout that gives background to the featured events or personalities. It also provides opportunities for interactivity with a ‘Witness’ section where users can contact the site if they spot themselves in the footage.
