Associated Newspapers is understood to be cutting costs by closing its cuttings library service, regarded by journalists as one of the best in Fleet Street.
From October, Press Gazette understands that the library will no longer take paper cuttings and will only file selected material electronically and online.
Around 12 library staff are believed to have taken voluntary redundancy. Some Associated Newspapers journalists are unhappy about the loss of the traditional cuttings system, because it means that many magazine supplements will no longer be filed.
Also, reporters and feature writers feel that they can't judge the true "weight" of a story without seeing how it was originally presented in print.
The move is part of a wider trend among national newspapers ditching their clippings libraries — with most now relying on electronic databases.
