The South Wales Echo’s Operation Echo Appeal has helped raise more than £50,000 to send war veterans and their families to Normandy for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
A party of 96 veterans and their wives, partners or carers left for France on Thursday for a four-day trip to commemorate the landings on 6 June, 1944.
The appeal was run by the South Wales Echo in conjunction with the Normandy Veterans Association and the Royal British Legion in Wales. The money raised has covered the transport, accommodation and cost of meals in France.
The fund also financed the journey and bed and board for another 59 DDay veterans who are also members of the Normandy Veterans Association but are making their way to the anniversary under their own steam.
